Car Care Tips

From Ivy's garage to your driveway. Simple habits that keep your car looking new between details.

Protect Your Paint

1. Never use automatic car washes

Those spinning brushes grind dirt from dozens of cars into your clear coat — that's why you see swirl marks. Hand wash only, or use touchless washes in winter when you can't hand wash.

2. Remove bird droppings immediately

Bird droppings are acidic. In direct sunlight, they can etch through your clear coat in 48 hours. Keep a bottle of quick detailer and a microfiber in your trunk. Spray, let it dissolve, gently wipe — never scrub dry.

3. Wax or seal every 3 months

Bare clear coat oxidizes. A layer of wax or sealant is sunscreen for your paint. Between professional details, a spray wax after washing adds protection in 5 minutes.

Interior Maintenance

4. Vacuum before wiping

Vacuum first — dirt, sand, and debris first. Then wipe surfaces. If you wipe first, you're grinding grit into your dashboard and door panels.

5. Use the right cleaner for each surface

Leather needs pH-balanced cleaner + conditioner. Plastics need an all-purpose cleaner. Glass needs ammonia-free glass cleaner. One product does NOT clean everything — despite what the bottle says.

6. Don't forget the cabin air filter

If your car smells musty when the AC turns on, it's probably the cabin filter — not your carpets. Change it every 20,000 km. A $20 filter beats a $150 interior detail for odor.

Common Mistakes

7. Dish soap destroys paint

Dish soap strips wax, sealant, and oils from your clear coat. Use car-specific pH-neutral shampoo. It costs $15 and lasts 6 months.

8. Paper towels leave scratches

Paper towels and old t-shirts have wood fibers that micro-scratch paint. Use clean microfiber towels only. Wash them without fabric softener (softener clogs the fibers).

9. Washing in direct sunlight

Water and soap dry too fast in direct sun, leaving water spots and soap residue. Wash in shade or early morning / evening. Your paint will thank you.

When to Call a Pro

10. Some things are worth paying for

Machine polishing, paint correction, ceramic coating, and deep interior shampoo require tools, products, and experience. DIY attempts often make things worse. A $200 professional detail once a season keeps your car looking better than weekly driveway washes.
